Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America by Beth Macy

This book gets 5 out of 5 birds from me. I was completely ignorant about the opioid crisis happening in America prior to this book. I mean I know drugs are everywhere but I didn’t understand how much they are true affecting the world around me. The addiction to opioids is like no other addiction I’ve ever seen or read about it. I enjoyed reading this book as a mom because I know how slippery of a slope it can be for kids. Most of the addicts aren’t these “terrible street trash people” they are teens or adults who break a bone or have surgery and get hooked on painkillers and continuously need the next thing. My own husband is a DPM and is often coming home telling me about most of his day was spent with patients seeking anything they can get, you know especially that stuff that starts with a D. There is such a fine line when it comes to using drugs to overcome pain and when it crosses over into an addiction. I loved this book. I feel more educated and aware of the devastating drug crisis around us. My heart also ached and admired the parents of the addicts who continuously tried to help and usually lost their child to overdose.
