On the Come Up by Angie Thomas
Angie Thomas deserves four out of five birds for her second novel. The first time I tried to dive into this book was with a physical copy and after a few pages just felt like I couldn’t do it… I needed to hear this one. So I put myself on the long wait-list for the audio book and it did not disappoint! From chapter one I felt like I was there in the ring with Bri throwing down beats. I’m guessing my children and husband are sick of me trying to throw down my own freestyle since I finished the book. There are only so many words that rhyme with “are you going to listen to mom?” Jk, Jk…. This book had me torn. It felt strongly similar to The Hate you Give but also completely different. When you read it, you’ll understand. I couldn’t give it the five because I felt like some of the writing was almost TOO similar to her first book- which is more of a personal problem for me. I love reading stories that give me even a tiny glimpse into someone else’s world. I’d recommend it- but I will warn you there’s a lot of swearing!
