I give this book 3 out of 5 birds. I didn’t love it but I didn’t despise it. I’m actually a huge fan of Laurie Halse Anderson (SPEAK). This one I felt like the language was so overdone that it was hard to keep focused. There was an entire chapter with the same sentence, which is poetic, but annoying when your listening to it. I think this topic just wasn’t my jam and probably why I felt more depressed than enjoyment.
This book covers the topic of anorexia and bulimia. I do NOT recommend this book for young teens. It most cases- you read a book and think this will definitely dissuade me. I didn’t feel like that by the end though. There was resolution, but the middle weighed so much it didn’t give you the happy feeling at the end.
The reason I read this book was because it was mentioned so many times in the Irresistible Kid Lit book I recently read as an example.
I didn’t like this book much either (although like most people, I loved ‘Speak’) but I think her weakest was ‘Catalyst.’
