I’ll give Roald Dahl 5 out of 5 birds for The Witches. First of all, I read this to my four and 3 year old. I tried with all of my might to persuade HLB(4) from choosing this one- because it seemed a little scary for her age. However, she BEGGED me. She continuously told me “She wouldn’t be scared.”
Guys she was scared surprisingly enough my 3 year old wasn’t, but they made it through at their own request and persistence and we loved it. I would perhaps label this child’s horror? Jk, kind of. I mean there’s a lot of witches, his parents die, and graphic details about the witches nails, feet, and head….
Often we like to “play” or reenact the books we are reading. I had to hide my laughter on multiple occasions when the girls would yell “MOM YOU’RE A WITCH! or “DAD, MOM’s A WITCH.” I’m only hoping that it doesn’t morph into something else when they’re teenagers…..
I laughed out loud and so did the kids. It was a fun and different read. It’s not the first Roald Dahl book I would read. It’s probably one I’d save after you’re well acquainted with the guy.
